Third World Living Conditions

Developing countries or nations suffer social injustices unthinkable to those who are fortunate to live in other areas of the world. Life in the Dominican Republic is very hard for Haitian refugees who have fled from Haiti. They face a real danger of being transported back to Haiti when they are faced with the threat of starvation, disease, and death. Refugees and their poor families usually arrive in the Dominican Republic malnourished and with very little money or belongings. Many of the refugees are living in hot, tin shacks and make-shift houses with no plumbing or electricity. The meager water supply is very contaminated so the refugees often get sick from drinking the water. The refugees have very little income, if any, making it near impossible for families to survive.

Facts about Haitian Refugees

  • A large number of the Haitian refugees do not have enough access to safe drinking water, adequate medical supplies, or sufficient food
  • The life expectancy is only about 54 years
  • More than 50% of all Haitian preschoolers are malnourished
  • More than 80% of the population is estimated at having a per capita income of only $150

Even though these living conditions are outrageous, there is still hope for these people! Land is being donated to build safe and protected villages for Haitian refugees. These people need homes built for them. The more homes that are built, the more lives we can save. It’s that simple!
